The chemistry of resin: Why catalyst control matters in winter
Resin Bound installers know better than anyone: not all resins are the same. And when winter rolls in, you need one you can truly rely on. DALTEX Performance Resin puts the power back into the installer’s hands through catalyst control and moisture-tolerant performance, giving you the confidence to install in changeable weather conditions.
Here’s everything you need to know about the importance of choosing the right resin and why catalyst control is so important…
The reality of winter installations
UK winters are often unpredictable, bringing fluctuating temperatures, intermittent rain, variable moisture levels, which means moisture damage with longer cure times becomes an increasing risk.
Pre-catalysed resin systems where a catalyst cannot be added on site can limit on-site control. No one can control the weather, but with DALTEX Performance, you can adapt to changing conditions as often as is necessary using the DALTEX VA5 catalyst. It’s this on-site catalyst control that allows you to adapt in real-time to the UK’s ever-changing temperatures and moisture conditions. You can adjust catalyst levels hour-by-hour, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all system.
What does the DALTEX VA5 catalyst do?
During the installation of a resin bound driveway, path or patio, the ground and air temperatures can be too cold for the resin bound system, which will slow the curing time, resulting in potential risk from moisture ingress.
This can be because of condensation (dew), frost or rain.
DALTEX VA5 catalyst accelerates cure times, therefore minimising risk from moisture damage, ensuring the system is not overly exposed to adverse conditions.
VA5 catalyst can be added to DALTEX Performance Resin to accelerate curing as follows:
Surface Temperature (oC) Catalyst addition (ml)
5-100C 3-5ml
10-15oC 2-3ml
15-20oC 1-2ml
Of course, catalyst levels can only really be determined on site according to experience and adjustments made accordingly to achieve the desired result.
Consideration should also be given to the material temperature and the likely overnight temperature as they can all contribute to the speed of cure.
You should not install if:
There is a risk of rain or frost before the system has a chance to fully cure – we recommend the use of a weather app to determine this.
The operating and surface and air temperature is outside the range of 5oC to 30oC,
The temperature is NOT 3oC and rising.
The relative humidity is between 30-90%.
We recommend a suitable chart, app, digital thermometer or our dewpoint calculator to determine this.
Why the right resin choice matters more than ever
The right resin isn’t just about aesthetics or brand preference; it’s about performance, adaptability and control in challenging conditions.
That’s where DALTEX Performance Resin stands out.
DALTEX Performance is formulated for the real world. As the UK’s number 1 brand, not only has DALTEX been independently tested by the BBA, it is also tested daily by thousands of installers. The advantages of DALTEX Performance with VA5 Catalyst speak for themselves:
Total control over curing speed - adjust catalyst levels to match changing site conditions.
No one-size-fits-all limitations - catalyst can be used to fine-tune curing times by postcode, hour or even by mix.
Adapt to moisture & temperature swings - maintain workable cure times even in winter.
The bottom line
UK winters aren’t getting any kinder, and installers need a resin bound system that works with them, not against them. Catalyst control isn’t an option; it’s an essential on-site addition that protects your projects and your reputation.
