What the 'Mixer' does
This is based on the Derbyshire Specialist Aggregates 7.5kg Mix Design
Be Clean – Be Consistent – Be Safe
When laying a resin driveway, or any other surface, your installation team should consist of three people. These are:
- The Mixer
- The Luter
- The Troweller
Each has a series of key roles and responsibilities to ensure your work is completed safely, effectively and without wasting any time or money.
The Mixer is responsible for the following:
- Place the first Standard Bag of 2-5mm stone and the Standard Bag of 1-3m stone.
- Add the pre-mixed resin.
- Add the two remaining bags of 2.5mm stone.
- Slowly add the bag of sand.
Stages 2 to 4 must be mixed for the same duration every mix. Failure to do this will cause colour variation in the mix. Use a stopwatch when mixing.
This should be no more than 5 minutes once the resin has been added. Once the sand has been added, make sure it has been distributed evenly through the mix.
- Switch the mixer off and empty the mix into your lined barrow.
- Ensure all mix is scraped out of the mixer, taking special care to remove it from the blades and from the door of the mixer.
- The ‘Luter’ then takes the mix to the ‘Troweller’
Important notes
- The Mixer cleans the mixing equipment down and checks that it is in good order.
- It is important to clean the mixer thoroughly each time to avoid build-up of resin – this avoids a lengthy and difficult clean up at the end of the day.
- Regular cleaning avoids contamination and clumping – residue from previous mixes could end up in a new mix. The old mix will have started to cure and will cause problems for the trowelled when they are laying the mix.
- Wipe the mixer round thoroughly with white spirit until all residue from the previous mix has been removed.
- Check the blades are not worn; excessive wear will result in an uneven mix and a longer mixing time.
Tip: Lightly spray the inside of the mixer with WD40 when clean – this will stop the resin sticking so much to the mixer.
